Sea Life in Glass: Models Date Back to 1800s – BU News Service

During the 1800s, father and son team Leopold and Rudolf Blaschka were commissioned by universities and museums all over the world to make models of invertebrate sea creatures from glass. The Blaschkas are more well-known now for their glass flowers models, commissioned by Harvard University in 1890. But, their earlier prized marine models allowed delicate invertebrate specimens to be displayed and exhibited permanently for the first time. Here’s a look at the exhibit at the Harvard Museum of Natural History.
