The international summer is now over, with Euro 2024 and Copa America having come to an end on Sunday.
It means the last of Liverpool’s remaining stars at the respective tournaments have completed their respective duties. Trent Alexander-Arnold and Joe Gomez were both involved with England against Spain, while Alexis Mac Allister and Luis Diaz went head-to-head as Argentina took on Colombia.
They, along with the rest of the Reds’ international stars, will soon meet their new head coach as Arne Slot continues his pre-season preparations. The Dutchman has already been busy with a small group of the club’s players, including Mohamed Salah, Wataru Endo and Harvey Elliott.

But Slot may have to travel to the USA for the Reds’ pre-season tour without some of his biggest stars. Those who went the distance in the Euros and Copa America will still need to take a break before reporting back for club duty.
That means Alexander-Arnold, Gomez, Mac Allister and Diaz may well miss the friendlies with Real Betis and Arsenal on July 27 and August 1. Darwin Nunez will be in the same position, having played in the third-place playoff for Uruguay against Canada on Saturday – and there’s the issue of a potential ban to take into account after the semi-final brawl.
Manchester United on August 4 could be the most likely return date for the South American contingent considering they’ve been based in the US for Copa America anyway. Alexander-Arnold and Gomez though may well be reunited with their club mates when they return to face Sevilla at Anfield on August 11.
The same goes for Virgil van Dijk, Cody Gakpo, Ryan Gravenberch and Ibrahima Konate, who were all knocked out at the semi-final stage of the Euros, and therefore haven’t had much more time off than the finalists.
Diogo Jota and Alisson Becker may meet up with their teammates during the tour of the US, having reached the quarter-finals of their respective competitions. Andy Robertson, Dominik Szoboszlai and goalkeeper Vitezslav Jaros though should be back at the AXA Training Centre soon, having not made it out of the group stage in Germany.
All systems are go now for Slot as he prepares for his first season in charge, with Liverpool getting the 2024/25 campaign underway at Ipswich on August 17.
