Arne Slot has already impressed pundits back in his native Netherlands by doing one thing at Liverpool.
All eyes are on the Dutchman as he attempts to replace the greatest manager in Liverpool’s recent history – Jurgen Klopp – after a brilliant 2023/24 campaign with Feyenoord, where he lifted the KNVB Cup and finished second in the Eredivisie.
So, what impressive thing has Arne Slot done at Liverpool? Let’s take a look…
Dutch pundit Bram van Polen – who spent his entire playing career with PEC Zwolle – has now praised the man from Bergentheim for not packing his coaching staff out with fellow Dutchmen, like Erik ten Hag has at Manchester United.
The 54-year-old has now hired Ruud van Nistelrooy and Rene Hake to assist him at Old Trafford, something Van Polen believes is “dangerous” as it limits the range of thought.
Voetbal Primeur quote the 38-year-old as saying: “It is also dangerous in a way that Ten Hag gathers so many Dutch people around him. You don’t know if that is wise.
“You are a bit afraid of that (lack of diversity). Because he is signing all those Dutchmen, then we will also be less well regarded abroad. I think that Slot is very consciously trying not to bring in all Dutch people at once. You do create a certain image, you have to want to stay away from that to some extent.”
Only now have Manchester United started to think about the structure behind the scenes at Old Trafford.
Sir Jim Ratcliffe has hired Omar Berrada from Manchester City as his CEO of Football at Old Trafford, while also appointing Dan Ashworth from Newcastle as Sporting Director, and Jason Wilcox from Southampton to be Technical Director.
Ten Hag did not have top figures in these positions to help him after replacing Ralf Rangnick, although Liverpool have made a concerted effort to ensure Slot is well backed, with Fenway Sports Group (FSG) bringing the esteemed Michael Edwards back as CEO of Football at Anfield, along with Richard Hughes in a Director of Football role.

This should streamline the transition from Klopp to Slot, and ensure Liverpool fans do not have to wait years for their side to deal with a significant exit, like Manchester United and Arsenal supporters were put through when Sir Alex Ferguson and Arsene Wenger departed.
