Half Time Statistics
Indonesia and Japan face each other in their last group-stage match of the AFC Asian Cup 2023. Both teams with 3 points from their previous matches, will be looking for a win to seal their place in the round of 16 stage.
Japan had been dominating the tournament since June 2023, but their 11-match winning streak across all competitions came to an end when they were humiliated by Iraq in their most recent meeting.
They lost 3-0 to Qatar in Doha during their first group stage loss at this event in 1988, and they lost there once more on Friday, more than 35 years later. In addition, Japan’s last consecutive Asian Cup finals defeat was in 1988. Should they lose this match, they could be the first team to miss the tournament’s knockout round since then.
Their defeat on matchday two marked the first time Hajime Moriyasu has not seen his team score more than once in a single game since March 2023 (a 2-1 loss to Colombia). Since November 2021, when they defeated Vietnam 1-0, Japan has not won an affair where they have scored just one goal in ninety minutes.
The Samurai Blue have led their group in each of the last eight Asian Cup group rounds, but that streak will come to an end if Iraq wins or draws their last group match against Vietnam. Indonesia has won a group match in this competition for the first time since 2007, which puts them in a position to advance to the knockout stage for the first time.
They would certainly accomplish that goal with a win on Wednesday, which would also match the total number of points they earned in their combined two Asian Cup group stage performances. During his time as South Korea’s manager at the 2017 East Asian Football Championship, Shin Tae-yong’s team defeated Japan 4-1 in a match that he has never lost as a manager.
